The West Latvia Tour is an informed and entertaining journey through many of the highlights and interesting sights of the region. This tour can be conducted in a very busy day or split in to two days, staying in Ventspills for an evening.
Visiting:
Talsi Old Town
Talsi is situated on nine hills, is reflected in the waters of two lakes, and is one of the most beautiful small towns in Latvia. Enjoy the peace and quiet of a small town and feel the harmony between past and present as you walk the narrow cobblestoned streets past old wooden buildings and well-cared-for gardens.
Kolkasrags
Kolkasrags is the northernmost point of Kurzeme and the place where the waters of the Baltic Sea collide with those of the Gulf of Riga. A lighthouse built in 1884 stands just beyond the 6 km long shoal. Kolkasrags is in Slītere National Park, where one can view characteristically Latvian forests and marshes, badger sets, beaver dams, and rare bird species.
Irbene Radio Astronomy Centre
The two parabolic radio telescopes in this former Soviet facility serve various research programmes in Latvia. One of the telescopes (32 m in diameter) is the largest in northern Europe and the eighth largest in the world.
Jūrkalne’s Steep Coast
This is one of the most picturesque sections of the Baltic coast in Latvia. It features a quiet and pristine beach and coastal cliffs that reach an impressive 20 m height. Many opportunities exist for both relaxation and active recreation.
Ventspils Livonian Order Castle
Originally built in 1290, the castle has been renovated over the last decade, and now houses the Ventspils Museum. The museum's digital exhibition on the castle, town, and harbour is considered the most modern in the Baltics.
