Latvia, Estonia (7 days, ~1270 km with hiking in National parks)

Recomended time: April - October

From the Art Nouveau quarter in Riga to the Medieval town of Tallinn. Highway driving from Latvia to Estonia is pleasantly interrupted by stopping at marked nature trails and stretching your legs while enjoying beautiful sceneries. The tour ends in Tallin.

•     Pärnu and Haapsalu – popular SPA towns in Estonia.
•     15 nature trails (about 40 km on foot in all) - cross footbridges over swamps and in meadows and forests, walk along the shores of the Baltic Sea, scale viewing towers.
•     The relatively unpopulated shores of the Gulf of Riga.
•     Estonia’s two largest islands - Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

1st day / Arrival in Rīga
Arrival.
Optional: Pick up the hired car**.
Pick up the info package with the map and detailed itinerary from the hotel reception. Free time for Rīga city sightseeing.
Overnight in the hotel ABC Kempings in Rīga, outside city center.
   
2nd day /  Rīga - Salacgrīva - Pärnu surroundings (~190 km, 100% Asphalt)
Breakfast.
Sightseeing and hiking trails (~10km hiking) en route:
- Nature trail over the dunes and through the pine forest in Saulkrasti (at the Baltic sea side) (1h).
- Forest hiking trail of the Baron von Munchhausen in Dunte (2h).
- Hiking trail through the Baltic Sea coastal meadows in Ainaži – bird watching possibilities in spring and fall (0,3h).
- Luitemaa bird watching towers at the seaside and Rannametsa hiking trail through the bog in the surroundings of Pärnu (2-3h).
Overnight in the hotel Lepanina in Kabli.
  
3rd day / Pärnu - Muhu - Kuressaare - Sõrve - Kuressaare  (~275 km, 100% Asphalt)
Breakfast.
Sightseeing in Pärnu - the most popular spa resort of Estonia.
Take the ferry: Virtsu - Kuivastu (Muhu island) (0,5h).
Sightseeing and hiking trails (~10 km hiking) en route:
- The ethnographic fishermen’s’ village Koguva on the Muhu island (1,5h).
- Koigi hiking trail on the Saaremaa island - through a bog and a forest (2-3h).
- The Sõrve horn in the western part of the Saaremaa island (the former military basis of Soviet armee) (1,5 h).
Overnight in guest house Transvalli B&B or Piibelehe in Kuressaare.

4th day / Kuressaare - Kärdla (~150 km, 70% Asphalt, 30% gravel road)
Breakfast.
Sightseeing in Kuressaare - a visit to the bishopric castle is recommendable.
Drive: Kuressaare – Kärdla
Take the ferry: Triigi - Sõru (1,5h, 2-4 times per day).
Sightseeing and hiking trails (~7km hiking) en route:
- Viidumäe Nature protection area - a forest trail until the observation tower at the seaside (1h).
- Panga cliffs – up to 22 m high dolomite cliffs at the seaside (1h).
- Ojarku hiking trail on the Kasari island - wooden plank-way through the overgrown coastal area with an observation tower near the Käina bay (bird watching possibilities) (1h).
- Sääre nature trail on the Kasari island - on a ground stripe in the see which is overgrown by junipers (bird watching possibilities) (1,5h).
Overnight in the hotel Padu in Kärdla.

5th day / Kärdla - Haapsalu - Matsalu National Park - Haapsalu (~140 km, 90% Asphalt)
Breakfast.
Take the ferry: Heltermaa - Rohuküla (~2h, 4-6 times per day).
Sightseeing and hiking trails (~5km hiking) en route:
- Hiking trail in Matsalu National park - wooden plank-way through the coastal reed fields (5 hours).
- Sightseeing in Haapsalu.
Overnight in the hotel Kongo in Haapsalu.
   
6th day / Haapsalu - Paldiski - Tallinn (~180 km, 98% Asphalt)
Breakfast.
Sightseeing and hiking trails (~8 km hiking) en route:
- Hiking trail on the Paldiski peninsula - the trail starts at the fortification which was build by the Peter 1st and leads along the steep Baltic sea banks, sightseeing of the former military basis of the Soviet army (2-3 h).
- Keila nature park - hiking trail through a forest to the Keila waterfall (1-2h).
In the evening free time in Tallinn for sightseeing.
Overnight in the hotel Oru in Tallinn.

7th day / Tallinn
Breakfast.
Individual departure from Tallinn or from Rīga (~330 km).
