The Usma lake is situated in Ventspils District, on the border with Talsi and Kuldīga Districts. In the lake, there are seven islands - Viskūžu Isle (the biggest island in Latvia), Moricsala (Morics` Isle), which acquired its name after a historical event in 1727 when a Saxon count - Morics, the challenger for the throne of Kurzeme Duchy, was hiding from Russian military troops there for a while. In 1912 Moricsala was announced the first nature reserve in Latvia. The names of the other islets are: Lielalksnīte (Big Alksnīte), Mazalksnīte (Little Alksnīte), Zossaliņa (Islet of Geese), Dvīnītes (Twinlets).
In spite of the depth of the lake there are many sandy shelves that make the lake very fascinating indeed. The shore is mostly sandy, and the lake is surrounded by woods or forests.
