Dating to around 1700, the Swedish Gate, close to the Old Town city walls and Jacob’s Barracks, was built as a symbol of Swedish rule.
There are many stories about the house above the Swedish Gate – one of which tells of a ghostly figure crying in the night; and another of Riga’s city executioner placing a rose in the window above the Swedish Gate on the day of each execution.
