Pauls Stradins was Latvia’s leading physician. As well as having this museum dedicated to his name, a Riga hospital – home to one of Europe’s leading cardiology units – is also named after him. This museum, in the Embassy District, and close to the Art Nouveau district, gives excellent in-depth information about the history of medicine in Latvia.
The Pauls Stradns Museum for history of medicine is one of the three biggest museums for history of medicine in the world. The visitors can see the development of medical history from the times of ethno medicine till the mid 20th century in thematic or overview excursions, as well as enjoy a unique exhibition concerning outer space biology and medicine.
The museum features such unique exhibits as the two headed dog, a dog that has been sent in to space, a collection of pharmacy drug containers, also the greatest achievements in medicine are shown – the discovery of ether narcosis, small pox vaccine, x-ray discovery and others.
