During the Soviet occupation of Riga tens of thousands of Latvians were forcefully sent to Siberia. On one day alone, in 1949, some 40,000 Latvians were forced to leave their homes in the middle of the night and board cattle trucks headed for Siberia.

A monument to those shocking events stands in Tornakalns, next to the railway track.
