In Latvia birds can be watched throughout the year, however, the most suitable season for visiting the country is spring and early summer when the countryside is bursting with life, the local species start making their nests and the migrant species’ flow is not yet over. 
 

Svetes paliene

One of the most important locations for migrating water birds in terms of rest and feeding in Latvia is the Svēte flood-land, which overflows in the spring time, along with the Svēte polder. It has been calculated that when circumstances are good, tens of thousands of birds can be seen in the area – swans, geese, corn-crakes, pintails, predatory birds, plover-type birds, etc.
 

Skrundas zivju diki     

This territory is to the North of Skrunda, and it is an important location for water birds during their migration. Northern swans nest in the ponds, and sea eagles and other birds such as falcons and plovers use them for feeding. This is a good place for bird-watching, although it has not been particularly structured for that purpose.
 

Satinu diki     

A restricted area with a set of artificial ponds to the South-west of Saldus. The ponds attract many different kinds of birds during nesting and migration season. The location has not been improved for tourist purposes, but it is still an interesting place for some bird-watching. The forests around the ponds are also home to many protected birds and species of bat.
 

Daugavgriva     

This is one of the most interesting protected territories in the city of Rīga, and its aim is to protect coastline biotopes – dune and coastal meadows and the birds and plants which are found there (among them, 29% of the species of orchids). There is a marked information trail with a bird-watching tower. This is the only outdoor viewing tower in Latvia that has been adapted for the needs of people in wheelchairs.
 

Randu plavas     

This area is full of coastline meadows, lagoons, muddy little lakes and sandy shallows, all full of reeds. This area of the eastern shore of the Bay of Rīga is found between Ainaži and Kuiviži. The Randa meadows are an enormously important location for water birds and rare plants – some 500 in all. A new bird-watching tower and a nature trail have been established for those who wish to study the meadows.
 

Idenu un Kvapanu diki     

Along with the Nagļu ponds, these are Latvia’s largest fishing ponds. They were established on the flood-land peat areas of Lake Lubāns in the 1970s, when the hydrotechnical system of the lake was first established. The Lubāna-Gaigalava road bisects the Kvāpāni-Īdeņa ponds. There are three bird-watching towers on the dams of the ponds. The ponds are a major location for water bird nests, as well as places for migrating birds to rest. There are extensive bird-watching opportunities in the area.
