Bastion hill is an elevated section of park with commanding views of the Freedom Monument and Riga Old Town. It is most famous for its memorial stones to the men who were killed by the Soviets as Soviet Special Forces attacked the Latvian Interior Ministry in January 1991.

Another interesting feature of Bastion Hill Park is the sight of countless locks on the two bridges that cross Riga city canal, close to the hill. These are left by couples who have just married.
